With cathedrals, forts, and an underground temple dating back to the16th century, Malta is a virtually unknown nation consisting of three islands: the main island of Malta, the lesser known island of Gozo, and the small, peaceful island of Comino, knows for it’s Blue Lagoon. If you are looking for your next getaway destination, here are our team’s favorite picks for the best places to eat, drink, and experience a cross-culture of food focusing on a tradition of Mediterranean, French, and Italian fare.

Gozo
Just a 25-minute ferry trip from Malta, plan a day trip to Gozo and discover its rich local history of food and flavor festivals.

If you are looking for a traditional place with to start your day, stop by Cafe Bellusa where the smell of freshly brewed coffee and freshly made almond tarts fill the air. Enjoy people watching and the local Gozitan way of life surrounded by markets and shops.

For an authentic, organic experience, weaved with food and wine, immerse yourself in the Gozitan country-side at Ta’ Mena Estate. An easy find traveling from the center of the island to Marsalforn, this is your option for lunch or dinner. All perfectly paired with their Estate wines, items include Kunserva Helwa, a sweet tomato paste matured in the sun, pure Gozo honey, fruit jams, olive oils, traditional sweets, and biscuits, along with pizzas and focaccia which are freshly baked. Guided tours through the vineyards and olive groves are followed by wine and food tasting session, so always call ahead to reserve your spot.

After a side trip to Calypso Cave for its history and archaeology, and a relaxing day of swimming, snorkeling, and sand castles on the beautiful red sandy beaches of Ramla Bay, head south to enjoy an evening of culinary excellence at Country Terrace. Accompanied by a glass or two of local wines from their cellar, sit back and enjoy fresh pasta, seafood, and beef with the best sunset view on the island.

Comino
The smaller island of Comino, situated between Malta and Gozo, offers a paradise for divers, hikers, and windsurfers with white-sand beaches.

Before spending an incredible day swimming and snorkeling around the clear, turquoise waters of the Blue Lagoon, visit Santa Marija Bay Eatery offering local rise and shine breakfast bites. Since this is the only walk up option for food, nibbles, and fasties on the island, grab a to-go menu and order the traditional tuna ftira, twistees, and a Kinnie for your picnic lunch.

Malta
Just north of the capital of Valletta, the center areas for Malta’s food and fun are located in the waterfront towns of Sliema and St Julian’s . With something for everyone’s taste and budget, you’ll find everything from view-friendly restaurants and cafes to “down that alley” type pubs and clubs. On our “definitely must visit” list is Ta’ Kris Restaurant, Wigi’s, Ta’ Cardona Wine Bar, and ImPasta.

For a more quiet, long lunch or dinner surrounded by brightly colored boats and waterfront ambiance, locals head to La Reggia, a fabulous little restaurant where everything seafood is cooked to order, fresh from the harbor. They also have a varied Maltese menu with items such a fresh Meager with mushroom, mussels & vadouvan fricasseé and fenek/rabbit cannelloni, nutmeg, and marjoram.
