When I talk to most people think of Aruba, they imagine its stunning white-sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, and luxurious resorts. But for those lucky enough to visit this Dutch/Caribbean paradise, there’s another hidden treasure that might not be in the guidebooks: the island’s incredible iguanas. Yes, iguanas.

Before arriving our first time, I had no idea that Aruba is home to hundreds, maybe thousands of these fascinating creatures, and they’ve become somewhat of a local attraction with those visiting. Often spotted lounging in the sun or darting across the island’s rocky landscapes, these iguanas have become a somewhat beloved part of the island’s ecosystem. For me, one of the most unforgettable experiences during my visit was feeding the iguanas — a moment that connected me with the wildlife in a way I had never imagined.

It all started when I watched the hotel staff start with a simple gesture: patting the ground. As soon as the first iguana felt the vibration, it emerged from its hiding spot in the trees, then others from rooftops, and quickly made their way over. I watched as we were surrounded by these curious creatures, all eager for a handout. I’ll never forget how they calmly approached. There was something magical about that moment — a raw, genuine connection with nature that you can’t experience every day.

I found out the iguanas in Aruba are quite used to human interaction, especially around hotels, and are generally very calm. They are herbivores, and their diet typically includes fruits, leaves, and flowers. While it's always important to respect wildlife and avoid feeding them anything harmful, the local iguanas seem to know exactly what to expect from the visitors, making for a safe and enjoyable experience. (So with all this in mind, I planned out my iguana experience for the next morning by saving my bread, fruit, and veggies!)

I never expected such a moment to leave such a lasting impression on me. The opportunity to feed these fascinating creatures up close, to watch them slowly make their way towards me, and to see them enjoy their food with a gentle attitude, was something I’ll always cherish. It was a reminder of how nature has its own way of surprising us when we least expect it — and how, sometimes, the most simple moments create the most beautiful memories.

For those who love wildlife, Aruba offers an unforgettable experience. Whether you’re lounging by the beach, exploring the island’s rugged landscapes, or even interacting with the local iguanas, there’s always something new to discover. I know that someday, I’ll return to Aruba, eager to once again share a moment with my amazing iguana friends and continue to make memories in this beautiful island paradise.
